ARTISTIC STATEMENT

The world of performance has always inspired me. As a child I would gather the neighborhood kids and organize a circus production. I would direct the gymnastics routines, choreograph a dance performance, and supply the clowns with whip cream pies, hula hoops, and objects with which to juggle. I was the dog trainer and would spend hours preparing the family mutt to perfect as many tricks as I could come up with. My brother kindly took to the role of magician; along with helping me invent, set up, and run carnival-like games in the yard. I recall having a lot of fun in the planning and execution of the circus(es,) and no adult help. It’s funny to look back on that now and realize that little has changed. Although
I don’t employ any clowns in my current work, I do
find that producing a show is satisfying in a way
that very few things are.
Dance, and specifically performance, universally
communicates in a language that most people
never learn, yet seem to know. My work as a
choreographer is deeply tied to the curiosity
that was sparked within me as a child,
yearning to find ways to express
without words and to offer
opportunities for others to
do the same.
BIO

I grew up studying Ballet, Jazz, Modern, and Tap in Laramie, Wyoming with Elizabeth St. Clair. After a hiatus from dance as a teenager, I resumed my love for it at The University of Oregon and have been taking class and performing ever since. I have been involved in dance in Portland for the last 8 years, performing with a variety of choreographers, including Linda Austin, Catherine Egan, Paige McKinney, Faith Hunt-Levine, Erin Zintek, and Tere Mathern (in the City Dance of Lawrence and Anna Halprin). I also find great inspiration and pleasure in taking Gregg Bielemeier’s technique and repertory classes at Conduit. My first debut, "Reasonable Doubts", took place at Conduit in February 2012 and my second full length piece, "The Wheel", will be performed at The Headwaters in November.
